R70 Chapter 4
by syl_beeWu Yunzhu Didn’t Come Home All Night
Wu Yunzhu was at home enjoying a fragrant dinner, while Xie Yun on the other end was so hungry his stomach was caving in.
He had been delighted at first when holding the child, secretly rejoicing that Wu Yunzhu was such a big fool—she hadn’t suspected at all that this child was related to him.
But as he waited and waited, the room grew colder and colder. In the pot was only half a steamed corn bun as hard as stone.
As darkness fell and heavy snow began to fall outside like goose feathers, he couldn’t even leave the house while holding the child. He could only wait anxiously for Wu Yunzhu to return.
“Damn it, where the hell did that wretched woman go!”
Xie Yun angrily kicked over a stool, but the child in his arms, who hadn’t eaten all day, was startled and began wailing.
“Oh, oh, don’t cry, don’t cry. Daddy’s holding you. Soon your bargain mother will come back and buy you milk powder~”
But the child had been hungry all afternoon, and his diaper was soaked, cold and clammy against his bottom. Uncomfortable beyond measure, he could only cry.
Xie Yun was getting annoyed by the crying and was about to lose his temper when Cheng Yaoyao swaggered in.
He was startled and quickly pulled Cheng Yaoyao inside, looking around anxiously to see if anyone outside had seen her.
“Are you crazy? Are you trying to get us both drowned in a pig cage? What are you doing at my house so late at night!”
Cheng Yaoyao had her hair in fashionable fluffy curls, her face made up with delicate makeup, and wore a blue fitted cotton jacket that made Xie Yun’s eyes go straight.
“What am I doing here? If I didn’t come, my son would starve to death!”
Cheng Yaoyao rolled her eyes and placed the large and small bundles in her hands on the table.
“This bottle is milk powder, this is the baby bottle. I’ll make it once, and you watch carefully.”
“What?!” Xie Yun was shocked to see there was actually milk powder, his eyes nearly popping out. “You actually bought milk powder? That’s so expensive! My wife really knows how to take care of her own child.”
As he spoke, Xie Yun’s mouth moved in for a kiss.
After kissing for a while, Cheng Yaoyao, her face flushed red, began preparing the milk powder for the child.
“Although our goal is to make Wu Yunzhu the sucker who raises our child, as soon as I entered the brigade just now, I heard those gossipy old women talking about how Wu Yunzhu hasn’t come home yet.”
“She’s probably angry at you. To get her to raise our child, you need to coax her back tomorrow.”
Cheng Yaoyao tested the water temperature, and finding it suitable, handed it to Xie Yun to feed the child.
Xie Yun clumsily put the nipple in the child’s mouth, and seeing him begin to suckle, he smiled.
“This little guy cried all afternoon, and now he’s finally quiet.”
Cheng Yaoyao touched her son’s little cheek, then suddenly became serious. “My parents said that since the child has been born, we should hurry up and get the marriage certificate. Otherwise, they won’t recognize you as their son-in-law, and this child will have to take my surname, Cheng.”
“That won’t do! This is my son!” Xie Yun became anxious upon hearing this. “I haven’t divorced Wu Yunzhu yet, so I can’t get a certificate with you. Didn’t we agree that when we can return to the city, I’ll divorce her?”
“I know, I’m not rushing you. I’m just giving you a heads up.”
Cheng Yaoyao stood up and said, “There are two steamed buns and some side dishes in that bag. I packed them from the state-run restaurant after eating dinner. I was planning to save them for tomorrow, but it looks like Wu Yunzhu isn’t planning to come back tonight, so I’ll leave them for you.”
“From the state-run restaurant?”
Xie Yun’s eyes lit up, then he showed a mischievous look and squeezed Cheng Yaoyao’s bottom with his other hand.
“Hey! What are you doing!”
“We already have a child together, what’s there to be shy about? Stay here tonight, and I’ll take you back tomorrow morning.”
Understanding what he meant, Cheng Yaoyao’s face turned bright red. “You bad thing, the moment your wife is away you want to fool around.”
Outside, heavy snow was falling. Xie Yun turned off the light, and the sounds of panting continued for a long time inside the room…
After dinner, Wu Yunzhu chatted with her parents until midnight before going to sleep, insisting that her mother sleep with her.
Sun Hongying said “annoying” with her mouth, but the smile on her face never faded all night.
The next morning at 5:30, Wu Jianguo and Sun Hongying got up right on time.
As soon as they opened their eyes, they smelled the aroma of food.
“Mom and Dad are awake, perfect timing for breakfast!”
Wu Yunzhu was already dressed and ready, her whole person radiating a different kind of spirit. In her hands she held stir-fried water spinach and a bowl containing three eggs.
Wu Jianguo and Sun Hongying didn’t know what was wrong with them. Their daughter becoming more sensible should make them happy, so why did their noses keep stinging?
Since it was cold in winter, they didn’t set up a table in the courtyard. The family sat on the kang and ate breakfast at the kang table.
Watching her parents eating thin porridge with such satisfied expressions, Wu Yunzhu’s tears suddenly dropped with a “plop” into her porridge bowl. She then covered it up by lifting the bowl to drink.
These were the parents who, during the great drought, had given her their last half bag of rice.
But what had she done?
Because of Xie Yun’s few words, she had let him give that half bag of rice and sweet potatoes to Cheng Yaoyao!
In this life, she would make sure this “family of three” got their comeuppance together!
After breakfast, Wu Jianguo had to go inspect the fields today to check the soil conditions, so he left early.
Sun Hongying had to organize the women to clear the snow from the roads. After cleaning up the table, she also left.
Once they were all gone, Wu Yunzhu took out a piece of paper and a pen and sat at the table to write up a purchase list and purchase plan.
The drought-resistant crop at the top of the list was sweet potatoes.
Their brigade mainly grew sorghum, so sorghum seeds weren’t a concern.
Thinking back, Wu Yunzhu realized that the nearby Fule Brigade specialized in growing sweet potatoes.
But she definitely couldn’t go directly to that brigade, or if discovered, she couldn’t explain why she needed so many seeds.
So Wu Yunzhu decided to go directly to the town market to try her luck.
After leaving home, she remembered something and asked the system in her mind.
[Our home doesn’t have such a large place to store things. Since you say you’re a space, can these seeds be stored directly inside?]
[Of course they can, but the spiritual spring cannot be used at the moment. You need to complete the current task to unlock it]
Hearing this, Wu Yunzhu’s eyes immediately brightened, and her whole body was filled with motivation.
At the village entrance, she caught an ox cart heading to town.
The old man driving the cart was a familiar face from the village. Seeing her carrying a burlap sack, he joked with a smile, “Yunzhu, are you going to the market for a big shopping trip?”
Wu Yunzhu smiled and nodded, “Yes, Uncle. The brigade asked me to handle something.”
The ox cart swayed along for about an hour before finally reaching the market.
Wu Yunzhu squeezed through the crowd, her eyes scanning the stalls. She quickly found an old farmer selling sweet potato seeds in a corner.
The old farmer was squatting on the ground with several burlap sacks in front of him. The mouths of the sacks were open, revealing plump sweet potato seeds inside.
Wu Yunzhu squatted down, grabbed a handful of seeds and examined them carefully. The kernels were plump and evenly colored—they were indeed top quality goods.
She looked up and asked with a smile, “Uncle, how much are these sweet potato seeds?”
The old farmer glanced at her and said slowly, “Twenty cents per jin, no bargaining.”
Wu Yunzhu calculated in her mind but showed no emotion on her face, still smiling as she said, “Uncle, I need a large quantity of seeds, at least 200 jin. Could you give me a discount?”
Hearing this, the old farmer’s eyes lit up, though he still said, “You want that much? Then eighteen cents per jin, can’t go any lower.”
