Girl, You’re Too Deep into the Role

Jiang Yi rested his chin on his elbow, gazing at the lush green leaves outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. Sunlight filtered through the gaps and cast dappled shadows, and every now and then, a few pure white doves would sweep past through the greenery.

Jiang Yi’s eyes followed the doves as they soared through the sky, and a hint of envy crept into his gaze. Without thinking, he curved his lips into a smile and muttered to himself, “Those feathered creatures really have it easy — having wings is such a superpower!”

“Setbacks and failures are what make a life complete!”

A crisp and lively female voice, like pearls dropping onto a jade plate, rang out beside him. Jiang Yi turned his head and found himself looking into a pair of beautiful eyes.

That shade of black was as brilliant and luminous as stars in the sky after the rain, with a dewy, glistening quality to it.

Her eyes were beautiful, and her looks were equally exceptional. Delicate features were set into a palm-sized face, bare of any makeup, yet she looked better without it than most did with it. Jiang Yi couldn’t help but recall a line of poetry: The peach blossoms and her face, each making the other blush a deeper red.

“Mr. Jiang, I’m so sorry to have kept you waiting — there was traffic on the way and I was running late!”

The girl lightly tucked back a strand of hair that had slipped down, her slender, pale fingers weaving through her flaxen locks in a way that was indescribably graceful and elegant.

Jiang Yi quietly clicked his tongue. No wonder his mother had been full of praise for her — she really was a top-tier beauty.

If it had been the him from before, he would have been falling over himself to court her by now. But now that he had set his heart on Qiu Rui, he naturally had no intention of giving any other woman a second thought.

Jiang Yi glanced sideways and saw that Qiu Rui’s expression was perfectly composed, without the slightest trace of anything unusual. It stung a little. Jiang Yi had been dreaming of the day Qiu Rui would feel jealous over him.

“Miss Chen wasn’t late — I arrived early!”

Jiang Yi stood up, put on a polite smile, and pulled out the chair across from him, inviting Chen Yuhe to sit. It wasn’t out of any gentlemanly instinct — he simply didn’t want her to sit in the wrong seat and crowd his precious girl.

“Thank you — just call me Yuhe!” Chen Yuhe smiled and thanked him, sitting down with a relaxed, natural ease.

Jiang Yi smiled back and waved over a server to order a hot drink for Chen Yuhe.

Chen Yuhe reached into her bag, pulled out a sheet of white paper, held it between her fingers, and began folding it.

Jiang Yi noticed this and felt a pang of guilt. Look at this poor girl — she’s bored enough to start folding paper to kill time.

He quickly scrambled for something to say. “Yuhe is Xuan Xuan’s colleague, right?”

“That’s right — Xuan Xuan and I aren’t just colleagues, we were university classmates too!” Chen Yuhe answered while continuing to fold.

Jiang Yi found Chen Yuhe to be a very easy-going girl, with no airs about her at all. Her manner was gracious and appropriate, and she was his little sister’s close friend, so as the conversation went on, he naturally began to take her feelings into consideration.

“I’m not great at making conversation — you won’t find it too dull, will you?”

“Of course not! Xuan Xuan said you’re funny and easy to talk to!”

“The sun must be rising in the west — that girl actually said something nice about me!”

“Xuan Xuan practically sang your praises! I originally thought she was exaggerating, but meeting you today, I can see she wasn’t wrong at all!”

Chen Yuhe’s hands moved nimbly, and in no time at all, a remarkably lifelike paper crane had taken shape in her palms. She set it casually on the table, looked up, and chatted with Jiang Yi with a smile. “Mr. Jiang gives off a very comfortable feeling — talking with you is really enjoyable!”

Chen Yuhe’s words were sincere, yet they carried an emotion that Jiang Yi couldn’t quite put his finger on. Those dewy eyes of hers were gazing at him with unmistakable warmth, and Jiang Yi felt the hair on his arms stand on end.

Is this girl getting too deep into the role? Wasn’t it supposed to just be putting on a show?

Jiang Yi’s heart was hammering. He was already thinking about finding a way to extract himself from the situation.

Whether it was an act or not, he didn’t want to play along anymore. If he stayed any longer, things between him and Qiu Rui would be truly finished.

Jiang Yi hadn’t even figured out his exit strategy yet when Chen Yuhe dropped her bombshell.

“I wonder what kind of girl Mr. Jiang likes? I’d like to keep seeing where this goes between us — I’m not sure if…”
